What’s the buzz with stinging pests?
We all know that 2020 has been a crazy year. One of the things that has become a hot topic in recent months is the murder hornet. People are up in arms about this Asian giant hornet. Not only does it have a gnarly sting, but it actually poses a threat to our honeybee population. Just a few dozen murder hornets can kill thousands of honeybees in a matter of a few hours.
Even though this murderous pest does pose a serious threat, it’s important to remember that pests like wasps, yellowjackets and hornets can be just as serious.
Some species are incredibly territorial and aggressive and will sting their victim repeatedly to protect themselves and their home.
If you or someone around you happens to get stung, try to remove the stinger as quickly as you possibly can. Clean the sting with soap and water and use a cold compress. If symptoms progress to throat swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing, it could be an allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. Call 911 or a medical professional immediately if that occurs. Lastly, make sure that you call a pest care professional to treat the nest on your premises. DO NOT try to treat or remove the nest yourself. Attempting to remove a nest without a pest control professional can be extremely dangerous and can even be life-threatening in some instances.
